1. Yes. It is now required.
2. Bad. Or atleast it can be. New Years = bad day to go to Mexico.
3. Not in my experience. Unless you mean throwing change into the cups of the little children singing on the side of the street… But I know they use to require your drivers license.
1. Until Jan 31st you don’t need a passport! But after that you need one!
2. Any day going to the border your going to experience traffic! Comming in and going out…especially in the evening and in the mornings.
3.No…except for the little gum kids!
Going across is no big deal, it’s coming back where the lines and documentation is required
Ride the RedLine trolley to the border and walk across
or at least park in one of the many lots on this side of the border and walk.
A passport is helpful but usually not necessary. Traffic conditions at the boarder can have long lines especially on weekends but traffic inside Mexico is positively terrible. My suggestion would be to just use the light rail line from downtown SD to the boarder and walk across which is much less hassle and once on the other side several local bus routes can take you into downtown TJ or wherever you need to go. Light rail fare is under $3 each way and Mexican city buses cost less than a dollar per ride. Good luck!
No
Real bad. Hours to drive back sometimes
No
you don’t need to pay anything at the border. passport is not required yet til Jan 31. spent my new year at rocky point and i just give my drivers license and they just swipe your i.d. and they will have all the information about your status. traffic is not that bad at the borders if you’re not travelling on long weekends or holiday season. no paperwork needed if you’re a US citizen but passport is required starting Jan31 when crossing any borders.
1) You need your passport if you want to come back.
2) Going across it is not too bad but coming back gets backed up, especially on Sunday evenings.
3) You need to purchase Mexican insurance to drive in Mexico for a small fee. Also their highways are toll roads so you have to pay.
Most people do not drive their own cars to TJ. You park at the US side of the border and take the taxi to wherever you want to go for a nominal fee. You should have some small bills such as $1 and $5.
Good answers here. BUT - seriously - DO Not drive into TJ without Mexican Insurance. Any fender bender will put you in jail down there until you can pay for the damage caused. Your regular insurance will not help down there. It is not worth the risk to drive without the insurance. Personally, I don’t drive in to TJ at all. I hate just about everything about it.
1. A passport is not required yet. It will pretty soon. Make sure you have your Birth Certificate. Identification is required when re-entering San Diego.
2. Going into Tijuana isn’t the problem, coming back to San Diego is the issue. Make sure to be ready for hours of traffic.
3. You don’t need to pay at the border. I ABSOLUTELY recommend walking across. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR! Especially if its a new car. I suggest leaving your car at the Parking Lots at the border(US side). The fee isn’t that big. It depends how long you’re planning on leaving your car there. Don’t take your car. It’ll be gone before you can say “OMG!” It’ll get jacked while you’re IN the car.
Good Luck.
