I used to live in McAllen, Texas before I retired to the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, DC. I still return to McAllen and love going over to Reynosa. I do not consider it dangerous in any way form nor fashion. I also used to go to Nuevo Laredo, but do not consider it safe at all.

I have just been to Ciudad Juarez, border with El Paso texas. Maybe that´s not too close to where you are, but just to let you know that is nice city. Is very safe, as long as you are related with mafia..jajaja.
Really, I got surprised, cause the people is in general very friendly, and there are very good food places. I liked most of every corner street food vendors… but also restaurants on the main highways like Panamericana, Toro Quinctaco for eg. and lots of places for carnitas y taquitos al pastor. A really good place for juices (aguas frescas), La Michoacana.
You will find plenty of accomodations.
On the way to downtown there a lots of Bars ,sports bars and more…very cool.

I have been going to Tijuana, Tecate and other nearby towns for 17 years with my anglo hubby and not once have we had any problems.
I organized a convention last June and had almost 100 US-Americans in it. Many of them had never been to Mexico but now wouldn’t hesitate to go again.
Tijuana is actually as safe as many like-sized cities in the US!
Safe, not a problem. However, you might want to bypass Tijuana and go straight to Rosarito. Tijuana is safe to visit but the traffic is terrible.
