Would you take a 3-month-old baby to Mexico for a week?

Gringodamus asked:

My wife’s family is from near Gaudalajara (San Pedro!) and she is considering taking a trip with our new son to visit family. My concern is that my son only has taken one round of immunization shots so far. Anyone else have experience with this kind of scenario? Please refrain from making stereotypical remarks, especially if you’ve never been past Tijuana.
He is also being breastfed only…
Also - I have been to Mexico and that town several times - my wife has gone many times over the past 30 years.

My family is from Costa Rica, and no…I won’t even take my 8 month old yet.

I would have serious serious reservations about a trip out of the country with any child under a year.

talk to your dr. about the shots, we can’t answer that for you.

i would worry about the water, but that’s it.
I’ve known missionaries who’ve had sick babies from the water.

i would take him. her family needs to meet the baby.
ask a doctor if is safe

I wasn’t comfortable traveling with my son when he was that small. I’d be worried about the exposure to new germs and unfamiliar things. The airplane ride alone scares me.

But, to be sure, I would call my pediatrician and see if there were any valid concerns. I would hate for the family not to get to meet the new arrival while he is still new!

I understand your concern, I’m friends with someone who has alot of family in Mexico and I think that as long as the doc says it’s ok (as far as having enough immunizations for the trip) it should be fine… depending on what the baby eats though. If it’s formala, you may need to take water with you unless it can be boiled. It’s been along time since I went last and can’t remember, but I remember that being a problem. I would say that you may be able to find out from the doc about weather it would be safe and what you would need to take to make it easier for the baby… I hope this helps…

I would not take a baby that age anywhere that I would have to fly. For some reason the pressure in the planes cabin is very tough and painful to the the babies ears. As to the shots; I would contact the babies pediatrician on that one.

No, I would not take a 3 month old baby to Mexico. I am not making stereotypical remarks, but you should have visited Mexico before and understand the problems that could happen. The baby does not have a developed immune system. I understand he will not be drinking the water or eating the food, but the dangers are still great.

I would not take an infant anywhere that far away if they have only had the first round of immunization. Wait until he is older (6 months or so).

Your son will be fine. I have traveled with my daughters many times out of the country and one time being when they were under 6 months. Just talk to your ped. and see what he says! Also the water is fine, everywhere uses bottled water so nothing to worry about!

No because the baby would cry too much and ruin the vacation. Leave him with a sitter.

I am not familiar w/ Guadalajara, but I took my son to Cancun (in a plane) for a week when he was 3.5 months and again when he was 15 months and we will be going again this yr w/ my now 2 .5 yr old and 8 month old.

I felt comfortable in Cancun, because I had been there enough to know you can always buy bottled water and formula from walmart, even in Mexico… (I am from south texas) I was also very careful of what i ate and drank since I was breast feeding exclusively and I did take a rented pump in case of emergency. I also took a bunch of my own favorite foods in case of problems. (oatmeal, pb&j, creamer, coffee and various snacky foods.)

I would also reccommend keeping your son at the house and not exposing him to strangers or anyone who is coughing.

    Good Luck

I would definitely be hesitant to take my 3-month old out of the country. While it’s understandable that your wife wants to see the baby, it may not be in your child’s best interest. I would talk to your pediatrician and see what he has to say. He’ll know what’s best. Good luck! :-)

    DEFINITELY!!!

My husband took our 6 week old daughter and I on a trip to thank us for going through pregnancy and labour. (a 6 hour flight) So many people gave us dirty looks and/or told us how “adventurous” we were for travelling with such a young child.

    * If you are nursing - be ready at any moment - there’s nothing better than a happy baby!
    * Just be careful and always use bottled water when water is needed.
    * Keep wet wipes and hand sanitizer on you at all times
    * If any toy falls on the ground then it is off limits until you can wash it with boiled or bottled water (just make sure you have spare toys).
    * Remember a hat and sun screen and keep to the shade…
note: they say NOT to put sunscreen on skin less than 6 months…we did because baby skin is so sensitive…a little heat rash is better than a burn!

It’s easy to travel with them at that age because they don’t ask for much BUT!!! if they get cranky remember that they are only babies and be even MORE patient and understanding.

Nothing - not even a newborn should hold you back from “trying” to live your life “with” them.

I would be worried about that as well..
If she still wants to take the baby, consider that you might have a problem coming back…make sure that you have his birth certificate and proof that you are his parents…

yes,, i took my baby to Mexico when to meet family when she was 2 months old,
i asked my doctor and she said it was fine,, the thing that she was concerned was the airplane,, she said that sick people travels on airplanes so the baby can get sick too, but she didn’t had any problem with us taking her to Mexico.
the baby was fine and she came back perfect we didn’t had any problems at all.

  16. Doug S says:

I think I heard somewhere that if the baby is breast fed, it will acquire antibodies from the mother.

I’m not a doctor, I just mention it because no one else did.
